Richmond is known throughout Virginia for its large number of impressive and historic churches. Particularly notable churches in the Richmond area include the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, which dates back to 1906, and St. John's Church, which was built in 1741.

The focal point of the Church Hill district is without a doubt St. John's Church, which overlooks the area from the top of a hill. Built in 1741, the church was the site of Patrick Henry's famous speech during the 1775 debate on whether the colony of Virginia should take up arms against the British. A reenactment of the speech, performed by an actor, can be watched every Sunday at 14:00.

Slash Church

Slash Church stands in Ashland, close to the outskirts of Richmond. Known for being one of the oldest churches in the whole of Virginia, Slash Church dates back to 1729 and regular guided tours are available.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church

St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Richmond is a particularly historic church, constructed in the 1840s. Still an important parish church, many seasonal religious services and events are held at this church, including Gallery Concerts and organ duets, which are always well attended.

Cathedral of the Sacred Heart

One of Richmond's most acclaimed historic buildings, the striking Cathedral of the Sacred Heart features Italian Renaissance-style architecture and an imposing copper dome. Other highlights at the cathedral include Corinthian stone columns, a vast interior, authentic period features and many major ceremonies. The land for the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart was purchased in 1834, although building work only actually started in 1903, finally being completed in 1906.
